Site Not Reporting: Missing DNS.DAT

Troubleshooting  --  Site Not Reporting: Missing DNS.DAT

Introduction

One of the reasons an AEI site might fail to report would be if the site’s system is missing the DNS.DAT file. Follow the instructions below to first diagnose if a missing DNS.DAT is the problem and then how to remedy the issue, if necessary.

Log In to the Non-Reporting Site Via Telnet Session

The telnet session must support zmodem (Tera Term, SecureCRT, hyper terminal).

Determine if the DNS.DAT file is missing.
Type: “dir dns.dat”
If the dns.dat is present, a message similar to the following will display:

After confirming that the DNS.DAT file is missing from the non-reporting site, locate a properly reporting site to log in to for the next set of instructions.

Log In to Properly Reporting Site Via Telnet Session

Confirm dns.dat is on the working site by typing “dir dns.dat”

After establishing that the working site has a good dns.dat file, type “zsend dns.dat”. This will prompt a file transfer.

Note that not all Terminal Programs look the same.

File should have been sent to downloads or wherever zmodem is set up.

Once the downloaded file is located, it can be received on the non-reporting site that is missing the file.

Log In to Non-Reporting Site Via Telnet Session

Type: “zrec” on Tera Term or similar program. A window similar to the one seen below will be opened. Navigate to the required file (dns.dat) and click “Open.”

A message will confirm a successful transfer.


Do a full reboot of the system by typing “r” and then “y”


Log back into the system, and enter “dir dns.dat” to ensure the file stayed in the system.

If required, go into the system and insert the file name into the parameters if not already done.

Enter, “EP” for edit parameters, the enter “8” for ports, and then enter “8” for ethernet. Hit “enter” to repeatedly to arrive at the dns.dat portion of the parameters, if not already present then type “dns.dat” in that section.


Hit the escape button or type x to get back out to the main menu.

Type “hr,now” and hit enter. This will force the system to report everything that has yet to be reported. Type “D” and then enter to check the status of the trains/consists being reported.


In the above image, notice the RPT section, which means reporting.

Y = reported

N = has not reported

P = system is attempting to report

E = error when trying to report
